What is DNS?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical and decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It translates human-friendly domain names into the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols.
DNS is often referred to as the phonebook of the internet, translating domain names to their corresponding IP addresses. This system is fundamental to the user-friendly nature of the web, allowing users to access websites without needing to remember complex numerical IP addresses.
DNS also plays a crucial role in email delivery and other internet services. It provides features such as mail routing through MX records and mail transfer agents and is an essential component of the functionality of the Internet.
How to monitor a DNS server?
ServicePilot makes it very easy to monitor a DNS server. Simply add a resource of the appmon-dns package via the ServicePilot web interface. ServicePilot will then perform DNS requests to the server and collect statistics of availability and performance.
The statistics gathered in this way include:
- Delay to get a response
- Number of retries needed before getting the response
- Response code given by the server
- Response given by the server in readable text format
How to install a dns resource?
- Use your ServicePilot OnPremise installation or a SaaS account.
- Add a new dns resource via the web interface (
/prmviews
or/prmresources
) or via API (/prmpackages
page), the default ServicePilot agent or another agent will be provisioned automatically.
Details of the dns package are located in the
/prmpackages
page of the software.
