What is a Server Files check?
A Server Files Check is a process that provides metrics about the files in a directory. It can provide information about the age, size, and number of files, as well as the status or existence of files in a directory.
This check can be performed on a locally accessible directory or over FTP/FTPS. Regularly performing a Server Files Check helps in maintaining the organization and integrity of files, identifying potential issues, and ensuring the smooth operation of server-related tasks.
How to monitor Server Files?
ServicePilot makes it easy to monitor Microsoft IIS requiring only the installation of a ServicePilot Agent or FTP configuration on the target server. A resource of the server-files-check package then needs to be added via the ServicePilot web interface.
The statistics gathered in this way include:
- Total file size
- Newest/Oldest file age
- Total file count
The returned values correspond to the locally accessible directory of FTP/FTPS server path specified as well as filters and mode of operation selected.
It is common to then apply custom thresholds to the values returned by these indicators per resource to alert on specific environmental conditions. For example, log files might be expected to be created every day and not seeing new logs might be an issue. Another use case might be that the number of files in a directory becomes too large if some batch processing task stops inadvertantly.
Note: This package supports local directory or FTP/FTPS file discovery but not SFTP (FTP over SSH).
How to install a files-check resource?
- Use your ServicePilot OnPremise installation or a SaaS account.
- Add a new files-check resource via the web interface (
/prmviewsor/prmresources) or via API (/prmpackagespage), the default ServicePilot agent or another agent will be provisioned automatically.
