Server Monitoring

linux snmp servers monitoring

What is SNMP Linux Server monitoring?

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is a protocol used by IT administrators to manage equipment and diagnose problems. Linux SNMP server monitoring involves using SNMP to gather metrics from a Linux or Unix server.

System administrators and Performance Engineers can use SNMP to collect a variety of data, such as CPU usage, memory usage, network traffic statistics, and more. This information can be used to monitor server performance, identify potential issues, and ensure the Linux or nix Server is running efficiently.

How to monitor Linux SNMP Server?

ServicePilot makes it very easy to monitor SNMP Linux Server. Simply configure the SNMP interface of the SNMP Linux Server. Then use the ServicePilot web interface to add a resource from the ServicePilot server-linux-snmp package.

The statistics gathered in this way include:

  • System: CPU and Memory utilization
  • Storage: Logical Disk utilization (Optional)
  • Network: Interface status and utilization (Optional)

The Linux Server (SNMP) package supports all distribution which allow access to RFC1213-MIB and HOST-RESOURCES-MIB.

This package can also monitor Linux service status using SNMP in certain conditions.

As Linux service status is not normally visible using SNMP queries, the Linux Net-SNMP SNMP Agent needs to be configured to provide this information in the NET-SNMP-EXTEND-MIB MIB. The statistics gathered in this way include:

  • Service status
  • Service process status
  • Last state change timestamp

How to install a linux-snmp resource?

  1. Use your ServicePilot OnPremise installation or a SaaS account.
  2. Add a new linux-snmp resource via the web interface (/prmviews or /prmresources) or via API (/prmpackages page), the default ServicePilot agent or another agent will be provisioned automatically.

Details of the linux-snmp package are located in the /prmpackages page of the software.
