What is Remote Desktop Gateway?
Microsoft Remote Desktop Gateway (RDG) is a Windows Server role that enables secure remote access to internal network resources. Acting as a secure bridge, RDG manages authentication, encrypts traffic and tunnels Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) connections, allowing authorized users to remotely connect to internal servers or desktops without requiring a VPN.
How to monitor Remote Desktop Gateway?
ServicePilot makes RDG monitoring simple and efficient, requiring minimal setup on the target Windows server.
Once the user-rd-gateway package is deployed via the web interface, ServicePilot automatically discovers and creates objects for each connected user session.
For every active or recent RDG session, ServicePilot collects and visualizes detailed performance and usage metrics, including:
- Connection Duration: Duration of the active session in minutes
- Idle Time: Time the session has been inactive
- Bytes Received: Data received from the remote client
- Bytes Sent: Data sent by the remote client
- Client IP Address: The external IP used to connect
- Connected Port: Port used by the client session
This granular per-user visibility helps IT administrators:
- Track usage patterns and resource demand
- Detect abnormal behavior or potential security issues
- Optimize Remote Desktop infrastructure
How to install a rd-gateway resource?
- Use your ServicePilot OnPremise installation or a SaaS account.
- Add a new rd-gateway resource via the web interface (
/prmviews
or/prmresources
) or via API (/prmpackages
page), the default ServicePilot agent or another agent will be provisioned automatically.
Details of the rd-gateway package are located in the
/prmpackages
page of the software.
