What is Cisco BGP?
Cisco Border Gateway Protocol, commonly known as Cisco BGP, is an exterior gateway protocol (EGP) that is utilized within enterprise network environments. Its primary function is to facilitate the exchange of routing and reachability information, often referred to as prefixes, between Autonomous Systems (AS). Unlike interior gateway protocols (IGPs) that operate within a single AS, BGP is designed to manage how packets are routed across multiple AS, making it a crucial element for Internet communication. It offers advanced routing features and supports a wide array of BGP attributes, allowing for flexible routing policies. Additionally, it includes features to validate routing information authenticity and protect the network from common routing threats.
