What is a Ping?
In the realm of computer networking, Ping refers to a diagnostic command used to verify the reachability of a networked device via an Internet Protocol (IP) network. This fundamental tool is integral to network troubleshooting, testing, and management. A primary function of the Ping command is to measure the duration, referred to as round-trip time, it takes for a data packet to travel from the source device to the target device and back. Essentially, it sends an Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) Request to the target device and waits for a Reply response. It can help network administrators identify if a device is reachable and how long it takes for information to travel across the network.
