What is Azure Application Gateway?
Azure Application Gateway is a web traffic load balancer (OSI layer 7) designed to help manage traffic to web applications. Unlike traditional OSI layer 4 load balancers that operate at the transport layer, which route traffic based on source IP and port to a destination IP and port, Application Gateway offers more advanced routing capabilities.
With Azure Application Gateway, routing decisions can be based on additional attributes of an HTTP request, such as host headers or URI paths. For instance, traffic routing can be based on the incoming URL. If the URL contains /images, the traffic can be directed to a specific set of servers (known as a pool) configured for handling images. Conversely, if the URL contains /video, the traffic can be routed to a different pool optimized for video content.
